Unveiling "The Growers": A Look into who we are and Values

Updated: Oct 3

Thank you for taking the time to read about us and welcome to Plot to Plate.

We are Joanne and Ashley and we are the faces behind Plot to Plate. In 2022 we took on an unloved allotment in the beautiful Lake District. The allotment has totally transformed our lives. Before this everything was grown in pots in our paved garden.

For the past 10 years I, Joanne have been suffering with an autoimmune disease that is aggravated by my diet. I have had to completely change the way I eat and cook. I have to keep away from e-numbers, additives, artificial preservatives and artificial flavorings etc. These are known as "Ultra Processed Foods" This as you can image has been incredibly difficult. Growing my own foods has given me the opportunity to have full control over what I am feeding my family and we have been doing this now successfully for a number of years.

From starting out my passion has grown, we as a family now produce our own fruit, vegetables, herbs & edible flowers. We preserve a vast amount of what we grow and try and use the whole of the item. We do everything from making our own stock powders to milling our own flour for breads and baking.

Herbal and floral teas became a passion I never knew I had. I started to research the uses for everything we grew. Before long I realised I actually had obtained quite a bit of knowledge. I joined a Facebook Group on how to reduce Ultra Processed Foods and was asked to start posting some of my recipes and dehydrating tips. This group now has over 72,000 members and I still continue to partake. From there, I understood that there was a genuine want from people to know how to live better, eat cleaner and get back to growing their own. We now have our own public Facebook Group "Plot To Plate UK" you can join here.

This group is ran by volunteers. Each one of them has an expertise in a different area. One of these is Gemma an experienced forager who runs her own courses/workshops under The Cramlington Forager. These take place across Northumberland. You can read about Gemma and her workshops here

The other admins are experienced growers with over 40 years of experience.

Join us on your own growing journey, you are not on your own and we are here to provide support (we can all fail together) join in your triumphs (when you pull out your first spud) and give you ideas on how to cook and persevere what you have grown.
